Riddle & Brantley, LLP | February 3, 2023

“New cases in AFFF firefighting foam multidistrict litigation (MDL) continue to climb as the first bellwether trial approaches. The AFFF firefighting foam MDL topped 3,380 individual cases in January 2023 after a new study clarified links between the substance and cancer-related deaths.”

Federal Panel Considers Hair Relaxer MDL

Riddle & Brantley, LLP | January 28, 2023

“More than 100 hair relaxer lawsuits have been filed as research continues to link uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, and other injuries to chemical hair relaxer use. A judicial panel will consider consolidating these lawsuits in February 2023, establishing a hair relaxer multidistrict litigation (MDL).”

An Oral (Health) History of the HIV Epidemic

North Carolina Oral Health Collaborative | August 3, 2022

“‘It just kept happening, over and over and over again. Patients of record, patients I’d known for years. Either they come in complaining about something or I see something. All of the classic oral manifestations of HIV disease, there they were.’”

What is Single Payer Health Care?

North Carolina Oral Health Collaborative | May 24, 2021

“On March 28, 2022, the Poor People’s Campaign held its first Moral Monday march in Raleigh since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The rallies, which began in North Carolina in 2012 and have radiated across the United States since, have long covered a wide range of issues that disproportionately impact those living in poverty.

“Covering issues ranging from fair housing to union-friendly labor policy, prison reform, and more, the Poor People’s Campaign describes itself as a “national call for moral revival,” building on the movement of the same name launched by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1967.

“The March 28th rally in Raleigh came in preparation for a Poor People’s March on Washington, again echoing Dr. King’s movement, expected to take place on June 18, 2022.

“As he did for many Moral Mondays prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Howard Eisenson attended the March 28th rally in Raleigh. He plans to attend the March on Washington on June 18th as well.”

Social Justice, Dentistry, and Forensic Testimony in the Courtroom

North Carolina Oral Health Collaborative | November 9, 2021

“On April 8, 2002, Ray Krone was released from prison after serving 10 years for a murder he did not commit.

“A decade earlier, a woman’s body was found at the bar Krone frequented. Officers identified Krone as a person of interest, and they took a Styrofoam impression of his teeth to see if they matched bite marks on the victim’s neck.

“Krone had distinctly crooked teeth, so after an American Board of Forensic Odontology-certified diplomate testified that Krone’s teeth were a match and he was convicted of the murder, he was dubbed the ‘Snaggle Tooth Killer.’

“Years later, DNA evidence proved that Krone was not involved in the murder – the bite marks were not his.”

Racism, Food, and Your Mouth

North Carolina Oral Health Collaborative | September 8, 2020

“Zuckerman pointed to housing as an example of racist policies that have created lasting impacts on generational wealth. White veterans returning from World War II were able to buy homes through the GI bill, while returning Black veterans were disproportionately blocked from homeownership due to redlining and other policies rooted in racism.”

A Dental Provider on the COVID-19 Front Lines

North Carolina Oral Health Collaborative | June 1, 2020

“When North Carolina began to shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Stroud and her team had just started the spring session of their school-based oral health care program. Every year, AppHealthCare spends four months in schools—two in the fall and two in the spring—visiting every school in Ashe, Alleghany, and Watauga Counties.”

Small Business Partnerships for Change

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media Graduate Thesis | May 2018

The words “climate change” alone derail climate conversation, reframing it in the context of politics rather than factual science. The strategy developed for this thesis will attempt to circumnavigate climate change-related cognitive dissonance.
